Lexington Humane Society
Help with animal care, events or administrative work through Lexington Humane Society's volunteer program. In-shelter volunteers must be at least 16, and long-term volunteers commit to four hours a month for at least six months. Apply online, wait for approval, then attend the orientation for your assigned campus before scheduling shifts. The volunteer page also has an event-volunteer email list for shorter commitments.
God's Pantry Food Bank
Sort donated food and pack boxes at the Volunteer Center, 817 Winchester Road. The food bank specifically welcomes ages 10 to 15 with a parent or guardian; its separate Fayette County pantry roles require volunteers to be 18 or older. Use the registration link for the role you want, and email volunteerservices@godspantry.org for groups of 16 or more.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Help with customer service, merchandise displays or donation-center work at Lexington ReStore, 451 Southland Drive. Volunteers must be at least 16; ages 16 and 17 need a parent-signed waiver and a chaperone age 21 or older, with one adult for every four teens. Apply through MyImpactPage and wait for staff to confirm your requested shift. Groups of four or more should email volunteer@lexhabitat.org before signing up.
Lexington Rescue Mission
Meal volunteers dish food, serve guests, wash dishes and clean the dining room, with breakfast shifts from 8:45 to 10 am and lunch shifts from 11:45 am to 1 pm, Monday through Saturday. Children ages 7 and older may volunteer with an adult alongside them throughout the shift. Complete the application and its handbook, confidentiality and background-check forms, and review the mission's statement of faith. Staff then contact you to arrange a suitable role.
Arbor Youth Services
Arbor lists help with donation rooms, shelter-room decorating, yard work, donation drives and youth outings at its Lexington program. Call 859-254-2501 to discuss a role and get started. Its FAQ says volunteers undergo background checks and training; the checked pages do not publish a minimum volunteer age, so ask before involving a child or teen.
Lexington Public Library
Library volunteers help with after-school activities, English-language programs and makerspace sessions, with placement depending on each location's needs. The minimum age is 14; ages 14 to 17 need parent or guardian permission, and some roles also require an adult chaperone. Use the online opportunities and application link, then complete screening, orientation and role training; applicants age 18 or older also need a criminal background check.

At 500 Alumni Drive, volunteers plant, weed and mulch gardens, help grow vegetables, and remove invasive plants along the Walk Across Kentucky. Download the volunteer agreement from the official page and email the completed form to arboretum@uky.edu. The page does not list a general minimum age, so ask staff which tasks suit your group and confirm the next work session before arriving.

Join a litter cleanup or organize one with your own group. The Take Action page links to an interest form for upcoming cleanups and a separate form to reserve supplies for a cleanup you host. It does not publish a minimum age, so confirm supervision and suitable locations with the organizers when bringing children.
Seedleaf
Help grow food in Seedleaf's community gardens, which welcome volunteers of all ages and experience levels. Individuals and groups of up to 10 choose a listed shift, sign a waiver and check in with staff at the garden. Groups larger than 10 should email garden@seedleaf.org with their size and requested dates. The page lists garden opportunities from March 10 through October 31; check the calendar for a specific date instead of assuming winter shifts or a 2027 schedule.
FoodChain
FoodChain volunteers prepare and hand out meals, grow produce, organize rescued food and help with classes at 501 West Sixth Street, Suite 105. Children can volunteer with an adult at any age; those 14 or older may come alone after a parent or guardian completes a waiver, while meal-delivery drivers must be over 18. Choose a shift on the volunteer calendar, normally limited to one per person each week, and use the Kitchen Door when you arrive. Wear closed-toe shoes and tie back your hair; the page allows parking in West Sixth Brewery's lot or available street spaces.
Hope Center
Serve meals at the Jacobs Hope Cafeteria, sort shelter donations or help prepare sack lunches and hygiene kits. Volunteers must be at least 12, and anyone under 18 needs an accompanying adult and the parent or guardian consent form. Start with the volunteer application linked on the page; large groups should email mfields@hopectr.org to arrange their visit.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass
Become a one-to-one mentor and spend a couple of hours with your Little three or four times a month, doing everyday activities such as games, meals or a library visit. Start with the inquiry form to receive an application, then complete training, an interview, reference checks, a background check and a driving-record review. The local page describes adult mentors without a numeric minimum age, so ask the program team about eligibility before applying.
Lexington Parks & Recreation
City volunteers pick up litter, plant and mulch, remove invasive plants, and help with community-center activities. Expand the role you want on the Parks volunteer page to find its sign-up link, or use the group interest form to arrange a project. For a cleanup on your own schedule, email parksvolunteer@lexingtonky.gov to arrange bags and gloves, complete the waiver before starting and record your hours afterward. The main page does not give one minimum age for all roles, so confirm the selected activity's requirements before bringing children.
