Where can I just go? Free places to sit, read or work in Lexington

Somewhere to read, work for an hour, charge a phone or sit outside, without having to buy anything. These are the places whose own pages say they're free to walk into, with the hours, seats, outlets and restrooms they list, and what they don't say.

Central Library, downtown: outlets, tables and two hours of parking

140 East Main Street. Open Monday to Thursday 9:30 am to 7 pm, Friday to 6, Saturday to 5 and Sunday 1 to 5. The library says outlets are available for charging laptops and phones, and its tables are at an accessible height. First-floor restrooms are to the right of the Phoenix Park entrance. You can join the library's network on your own device; its pages don't use the word Wi-Fi. Drinks need a lid, eating is only allowed outside restricted areas, and pets other than service animals stay outside. A ticket validated inside gets two hours of free parking.

The Arboretum: free, dawn to dusk

500 Alumni Drive. The grounds and the Dorotha Smith Oatts Visitor Center are free, and the grounds open daily from dawn to dusk. There are four picnic tables under the trees a short walk from the Visitor Center and two more by the Kentucky Children's Garden, first come, first served. The restrooms near the Children's Garden are open dawn to dusk except when the Arboretum closes for special events such as football game days. Leashed dogs are welcome on the Walk Across Kentucky paved path; parties and loud music aren't.

Outside: McConnell Springs and Raven Run

McConnell Springs, 416 Rebmann Lane: the city says no registration is needed to visit and lists hours of Monday to Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 1 to 5. Big parks with tables and restrooms: Jacobson and Masterson Station

Jacobson Park, 4001 Athens-Boonesboro Road, has shelters with picnic tables and indoor restrooms near shelters 1, 2 and 3; shelters are rented by reservation, and the page doesn't say whether an empty one is open to sit in. Masterson Station Park, 3051 Leestown Road, lists a picnic area and a restroom building. Neither page lists hours.

What these places' pages don't say

As of October 26, 2026, only the library pages mention outlets or connecting a device, and none of these places says whether you can bring your own food. The UK Art Museum, Raven Run, the Living Arts & Science Center and 21c don't list restrooms, and the city's park pages don't say entry is free. If one of these matters for your visit, call ahead.
